AYLESBURY LAND ROVER FANATICS CLUB

Off Road Event – Rules and Regulations

These Rules and Regulations are, as far as is practically possible, to ensure the safety of Club Members and the general public during off road events. Also to minimize the risk of personal injury and, the risk of damage to vehicles involved in off road events. Club members must adhere to these Rules and Regulations during all Club of Road events.

The Club Rules and Regulations will be overseen during events by the Clerk of the Course and the nominated marshals. Any Club member who does not adhere to the Rules and Regulations may be prevented from participating in an event or be instructed to leave a course. The Clerk of the Course’s decision in all matters is final.

Vehicle Preparation

1)    Vehicles must be fitted with seatbelts.
2)    Seat and seatbelt mountings must be secure and in good condition.
3)    Batteries and fuel tanks must be securely fixed into the vehicle and be free of any leaks.
4)    Vehicles must be fitted with suitable closed front and rear recovery points.
The tie down rings fitted to a vehicle as standard are only for use on vehicle transporters. They are not suitable for vehicle recovery purposes.
Suitable recovery points include NATO hitches, chassis mounted JATE rings, bolt or weld on chassis rings, recovery points integral to a heavy duty or winch bumper, correctly fitted tow brackets.

These items will be checked at the event scrutineering.

Before Entering a Course

1)    Members must present a current Membership card on registration.
2)    The required forms must be completed.
3)    The course fee must be paid.
4)    The vehicle must pass the event scrutineering.
A vehicle that does not pass the scrutineering will not be allowed on the course.

On the Off Road Course

1)    Only current club members who have paid the annual membership fee may drive off road at club organised events.
2)    Only club members who have completed the required forms AND have paid the correct fee may drive.
3)    The course route and direction must be followed at all times.
4)    Seat belts must be worn at all times.
5)    Passengers may only be carried in seats equipped with seatbelts.
6)    Only one person per seat.
Children must not ride on an adult’s lap.
7)    Ensure your behaviour does not affect other club members.
It is your responsibility to drive with consideration for other people. Do not tailgate other vehicles; allow the vehicle in front to clear an obstacle before you attempt it. Do not try and force other drivers to speed up - wait.
8)    Directions or instructions from the Clerk of the Course or the nominated Marshals must be followed.
9)    The Clerk of the Course reserves the right to instruct any member to leave the course, temporarily OR permanently, if that member’s behaviour is deemed to be inappropriate.

Recovery Equipment

Although there is no requirement to carry any recovery equipment, it is recommended that each vehicle carries at least 1 Bow shackle and 1 recovery Rope or Strap.
Any equipment that is carried must be,
    a) specifically designed for vehicle recovery.
    b) of a sufficient rating (at least 8000kg rating as a guide for ropes and straps).
    c) be free from any damage or defects.
The Clerk of the Course reserves the right to instruct a member not to use any equipment that is not suitable or is damaged.

Recovery Procedures

1)    Only suitable recovery points may be used.
Ropes and straps are not to be attached to bull bars or bumpers.
2)    Only closed recovery points may be used.
Hook type recovery points and 50mm tow balls may not be used, because there is a high risk that any rope or strap used will slip off during a recovery operation.
3)    Chassis mounted recovery points should be used in pairs connected together with a suitable Bridle.
Using only one chassis mounted recovery point may result in the failure of the mounting and/or damage to the chassis rail
4)    Use of Ground Anchors and Tree Strops must be kept to a minimum.
    Environmental damage must be minimized.
5)    Only tested Bow shackles may be used for recovery operations.
Bow shackles are tested and rated; the information is cast into the bow of the shackle. ‘D’ shackles do not have any rating information on them.
6)    Kinetic Energy Recovery Ropes (K.E.R.R) are banned at Club events. Under no circumstances will there use be allowed.
These ropes are designed to stretch up twice their original length. The forces applied to vehicles during a K.E.R.R recovery are EXTREME. There is a very high risk of injury and/or damage to vehicles due to failed recovery points.
Any Club member who brings a K.E.R.R to an event will not be allowed to take it on the course. It must be left at the event control.
Recovery ropes and straps that allow a maximum of a 20% stretch, to reduce vehicle shock loadings, are allowed.
7)    During a recovery operation it is recommended that all passengers exit the vehicle.
8)    Recovery operations must be coordinated by someone not operating a vehicle.
9)    The practice of joining ropes or straps together with a shackle to extend their length is to be avoided.
Where ropes or straps must be joined, no passengers are to stay in any of the vehicles involved. Spectators must be kept at a safe distance from the recovery.
10)    Tandem recoveries, two or more vehicles linked together to recover one vehicle, may only be undertaken when supervised by the Clerk of the Course or a nominated Marshal.
Tandem recoveries can be dangerous. Very high levels of strain are placed on the vehicle in the centre of the chain. Only the drivers will be allowed in any vehicle involved in a tandem recovery.
